The Royal Academy of Dance
The Royal Academy of Dance
The Royal Academy of Dance is the largest examining and teacher education organisation for classical ballet in the world. It has over 17,000 members and a network of international offices and representatives. There are currently 1,200 students in full-time or part-time teacher training with the Academy. Each year, the Academy Examination Syllabus is taught to more than 250,000 students.
Graduating from one of the RAD teacher education programmes entitles the teacher to be included in the Academy's Register. They take great care to monitor teachers throughout their training and beyond to ensure that high standards are maintained.
Examinations are open to all students studying the Grade and Major syllabi, offering them a challenge to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of the work. The Grade Syllabus is for younger children and is great fun to dance. The Major Syllabus is for boys and girls over the age of 11 who wish to study ballet more seriously, possibly with a view to pursuing a career in dance or dance related subjects. However, examinations are not compulsory. Students who, for various reasons, may not wish to take a formal examination, can opt instead for the Grade Syllabus Assessments.
The Academy's syllabus notes, music books, tapes and CDs, as well as study aids for teachers and high quality dance wear, are available from the shop which is situated at Academy headquarters. The shop also has an efficient international mail order service.
