What is Jam Free?
Jam Free is a dance performance project coordinated by London Youth Dance and Sadler's Wells for School Sports Partnerships based in the outer London boroughs. The project is designed to inspire girls aged 11-16 yrs to take part in physical activity through dance.

Who delivers this work?
Each year London Youth Dance and Sadler's Wells invite partner organisations including dance agencies, dance companies and venues to apply to  run a Jam Free project in their borough. The partner organisations are responsible for identifying the School Sports Partnership with whom they wish to work and assigning a dance artist to work with their young people.

What does it involve?
The project funds a ten-week after-school dance club delivered by an experienced dance artist charged with producing a dance piece for performance.

A Jam Free performance is then hosted at a school within the School Sports Partnership and young people from other schools and the local community are invited to attend. London Youth Dance and Sadler's Wells  commisison three Jam Free Touring Companies to visit each partner's performance alongside a professional choreographer identified through a bursary scheme in partnership wih East London Dance.   Each performance consists of:

• The Jam Free Dance Club piece
• Work by three guest London based Youth Dance Groups
• Work by a professional choreographer - the East London Dance/London Youth Dance Blueprint Bursary Winner
• Plus performances by local schools, community groups or professional companies as invited by each partner organisation

Following the performance each Jam Free Dance Club is invited to perform at a celebratory performance at the Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler's Wells.

Each Partnership is also visited by the professional choreographer within curriculum time prior to the Jam Free Performance.  Their session will include a repertoire based practical workshop and an opportunity for Q&A about their creative process, billed as the Inside Out Day.  A teachers pack is also available to all schools within the Partnership.

When does this take place?
Funding is secured for 2009 - 2010 and 2010 - 2011.  Jam Free Partners are recruited in the Summer and activity within their chosen School Spots Partnership begins in November/December culminating in a series of performances in Spring of the following year.

More about the Blueprint Bursary
Jam Free incorporates the East London Dance / London Youth Dance Blueprint Bursary initiative which supports an emerging choreographer via a mentor, choreographic commission and series of commissioned schools based workshops. Find out more about the Bursary
